What is Coaching & Counselling?
Differences
Focus mainly on the FUTURE

-
Coaching takes you from where you are now to where you want to go: set targets & achieve goals.

-
Investigate how to develop strengths and use new strategies to act differently in the future.
Origin: sports & education

-
Founding father of professional life coaching: Thomas J. Leonard:
"All problems exist in the absence of a
good conversation."
Focus mainly on the PAST

-
Counselling helps you process traumatic or upsetting life experiences that contribute to current issues.

-
Explore underlying patterns of behaviors & their origins from the past to create changes in the present.
Origin: psychology

-
Founder of humanistic and client-centered counselling: Carl R. Rogers
“The curious paradox is that when I accept myself just as I am, then I can change.”
Similarities
Coaching and counselling are both vital parts of a guiding process: we look at what needs to be discovered and processed from the past, so we can make changes in the present and achieve improvements in the future.
Both ways support development and progress: are based on an equal and secure relationship with an agreed focus or goal.
You are responsible for Your own learning and the coach/counsellor is a guide supporting You on Your path of self-discovery and growth.
Limitations
Coaching & Counselling
CAN NOT...
"Fix your problems"/"Cure you"
Coaching & Counselling can not change or eradicate your issues/conflicts/life stressors.
It isn't mind control, it can not turn you into a new person or change your personality traits.
For ex. your anxiety will not disappear but you can learn to manage it more effectively.
Give advice
Coaches & Counsellors never give advice on how to resolve a problem or what you should do in a situation.
My goal is to offer guidance, encouragement and challenges, as you find your own solutions and way forward.
Offer guarantee
There is no guarantee that there is a “solution” or that an idea/plan will work out just the way you imagine it.
I will be there to listen and to understand how you're thinking and feeling. I will support you in exploring your difficulties and achieving your personal goals.
Do all the work
The coaching & counselling process will be our joined work, but the results will depend on you: no one else can do the work for you.
I do believe that if you put in the time and effort then you can create positive changes.
Give a diagnosis
Coaches & counsellors are not medically trained, therefore we can not give you a diagnosis, prescribe medication or treat you for a mental health condition or addiction.
In these cases I can offer you a referral to a relevant medical professional or specialist.
Become your friend
My goal as a coach & counsellor is to create a safe, trusting and positive relationship with you, but my care is restricted to a professional capacity.
I will outline the professional boundaries of our relationship in our first Intake Session.
Change someone else
We can not control other people. We will explore only your thoughts and behaviours or how you relate to others.
Keep in mind, that changing your behaviours could naturally have an effect on the people around you, but this will not always play out in the way you're hoping for.
On-call
My availability is limited, but I want you to know that you are not alone. If you’re finding things difficult between sessions, then we can create a plan about how to contact me or where to get more support and help.
